New year, new people, if I didn’t know myself well enough, I would say. Anyway, on January 1, a new person was definitely born on the beach in Szigliget: for the first time in my life, I dived up to my neck in 0 degrees water of Lake Balaton! Hundreds of people attended the event, and there was almost no parking space around the beach. Of course, most of them were just there to watch. We got there 15 minutes before the start, and at that time you couldn’t even see the “lek” being cut, so many people stood (or sat) on the shore. Filled in the registration form, took the blood pressure… Now for some reason it was only 120, I was happy. The “heated” tents were mostly just warmed by the bodies of people changing clothes inside, but those who want to climb into the icy water shouldn’t complain about such things.
Standing on the snow bank, the soles of my feet were completely frozen, so when the cannon went off and we waded into the 0 degree water, at least there I didn’t feel anything. On the contrary, I felt like my whole leg was hanging in the flames: such cold water was no longer icy, but burned! After 2-3 minutes, this burning sensation disappeared, because by then I could no longer feel my legs at all, not even my hands wrapping the ice. My upper body was interesting and was able to withstand the test better. Someone kicked his shin completely on the ice, bleeding profusely, and he didn’t feel it at all. It was not easy to put on clothes afterwards without arms and legs (although they moved, I had no feeling in them). All in all, it was an unforgettable experience, and I hope to participate next time!
