Vice President Ronnie Brunswick on Wednesday stressed the importance of a deep understanding of the country as a whole for effective leadership.
He criticised party leaders for focusing too much on Paramaribo and Wanica, while other areas, such as the interior, were often neglected.
Brunswijk said understanding the needs of people in each region was essential for good governance.
He expressed concerns about the new electoral system, which gives Paramaribo and Wanica a combined 38 seats.
Brunswick said this could give these regions a disproportionate influence on national decision-making.
Brunswick warned that this system could reduce attention to other parts of the country because parties focus mainly on winning votes in urban areas.
Brunswijk also revealed that he had conducted his own poll but would not make the results public.
He also said that if he did not receive at least 100,000 votes, he would end his political career as it would mean he did not have enough popular support.
