Sonamgang Primary School in Puntsolin County is a special education school in the country and is currently facing a shortage of special education teachers.
The school has approximately 30 pupils with special educational needs, 17 of whom have severe disabilities.
The school has only eight special education teachers.
The current teacher-student ratio is 1:4, meaning there is one teacher for every four students.
Principal Tshewang said the school needed to add four special education teachers to provide full attention to all students.
He said more than half of SEN students were in serious condition and needed one-to-one attention, as well as different skills training.
Currently, each teacher is responsible for two to three students per class, depending on the severity of the student’s disability and the skills they are learning.
The school is equipped with special educational facilities such as ramps and handrails from the school gate to the classrooms. There are toilets for students in the school building.
The school also built special toilets with modern facilities outside the building for students with special educational needs.
Classrooms are designed for the children’s comfort with specially designed tables and chairs. The school also has a play garden and skills training facilities.
The classrooms are divided into two categories, each with furniture of different sizes, one for larger students and the other for smaller students.
The principal added that there are currently two classrooms for special education students as there is no separate building for them. These classrooms are partitioned to accommodate different classes.
Teachers will also teach different subjects and different levels of courses. In each class, the teacher will arrange two to three students to sit together.
He said one of the institutions sponsored the furniture and interior design of the classrooms. The school has proposed in its 13th Five-Year Plan to build a separate building for special educational needs.
“Right now, the classrooms are very crowded and there are disruptions from other classes,” he said.
The principal said that although the school also provides skills training for students, it focuses more on academics.
Special education teacher Sonam Zangmo said the school provides various skills training courses for students in addition to academic courses. She added that those students who do not have severe disabilities receive skills training and attend classes with regular students.
However, she said students with severe disabilities needed one-on-one attention. “Some of these students are very difficult to manage in the classroom.”
After completing Grade VI, students with special educational needs will be transferred to Puen Tso Ling Regesa High School.
In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the education department plans to upgrade facilities at 20 central schools and increase the number of integrated schools from 39 to 44.
The Royal Public Service Commission plans to recruit 55 special education teachers this year.
