The Colombo High Court issued the order when former Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, appealed for a motion to release the money to them.
The accused informed the Criminal Investigation Department and the court through his lawyer that he deposited money received from ambassadorial salary, sale of houses and sale of tourist resorts into the account.
However, during the multiple summons, the prosecution notified the defense to submit documents to confirm the facts on how the money was received, but the documents were not submitted. The defense informed the court that according to the Ukrainian government’s investigation, the country’s police had been informed that they could not produce the relevant documents.
Government lawyer Udara Karunatilaka, who presented the facts, said Sri Lanka had not made such a request to Ukraine and they had studied the allegations separately.
After considering the facts on both sides, the court declared that it was impossible to make an order for the release of the money as requested by the defense.
