The trial of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has now begun on Saipan in the Mariana Islands.

There, Assange will plead guilty to charges related to publishing classified information. Is this part of a settlement Assange reached with US authorities to avoid extradition to the US? As a result, Assange will be sentenced to the same amount of jail time as he would have been if he had been detained in the UK.

We will fly to Canberra in about two hours.

Assange arrived in the Mariana Islands earlier this evening on Wednesday morning local time. He was released from a British prison on Monday, where he had been held for five years and two months. He previously worked at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for about seven years.

After the trial, Assange can return to his home country of Australia as a free man. WikiLeaks reported on social media X that it is expected to go online in more than two hours. He plans to fly to Canberra, the capital of Australia.
