Customs releases name of deceased senior official

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has released the identity of a senior customs official who collapsed and died during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Director General of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, revealed that the deceased was the Deputy Auditor General of Customs, Etop Andrew Essien, who was previously the Deputy Auditor General in charge of revenue in the Customs Accounting Department.

Maiwada explained that Essien died while making a presentation to the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee where he was overseeing the reconciliation of revenue for the service.

Maiwada said: “About three minutes into his speech, Deputy Auditor General Essien asked for water and showed signs of discomfort. Despite immediate efforts to assist him, he unfortunately passed away.

“Deputy Auditor General Essien was born on November 16, 1967 and joined the Nigeria Customs Service on November 27, 1989, serving the nation for over three decades. Hailing from Nsit-Ubium in Akwa Ibom State, he was known for his diligence and outstanding service record in the accounting department. His duties as DC Revenue were crucial in ensuring accurate reconciliation of revenues, a job he performed with utmost precision and dedication.”

The Director General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on behalf of all officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service, expressed deep condolences to the family of Deputy Commissioner Essien.

“The entire force is deeply saddened by the loss of such a dedicated and valued team member. We are committed to supporting and helping his family and colleagues through this difficult time.”

The Nigeria Customs Service said: “Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. His exemplary service and unwavering dedication to duty will be remembered and cherished by the entire Nigeria Customs Service. The Nigeria Customs Service will always remember Deputy Auditor General Essien for his outstanding contribution, exemplary service and dedication to the nation. We honour his memory and his legacy will continue to inspire us all.”

Deputy Auditor General Essien is survived by his beloved wife and children. May his soul rest in peace.
