NASSAU | Prime Minister Philip Davis KC celebrated his government’s record signing of about 30 industrial agreements since taking office and harshly criticised the Opposition’s plan to sack civil servants announced in Parliament during the 2024/25 budget debate last week.
Davis confirmed that “these thirty union agreements increase wages across the entire civil service, including much-needed pay rises for the uniformed sector, teachers and nurses.
“We then held the first public service-wide outreach event in eight years for over a thousand civilian employees, which brought them millions of dollars in additional revenue.
“At the same time, we have also promoted over a thousand Bahamians from a backlog and processed hundreds of additional general and executive promotions.”
Speaking about plans to further increase civil servants’ salaries, the Prime Minister said: “The pay rise for civil servants is significant but we are not done yet.
“We will be reviewing public servant pay this year to ensure we continue to increase public servant pay and ensure public servants are paid competitively.
“We have allocated sufficient funds to ensure prompt action following the review. The recommended pay increases will commence within this financial year.”
Revealing the Pintard FNM party members’ plans to target civil servants, the Prime Minister said: “I was shocked when I learned that the other party MPs seemed to have issues with the allocations we made to facilitate this effort.
“I was shocked until the Leader of the Opposition said on page 34 In paragraph 14 of his speech, he said he intended to radically simplify and streamline the public service. He said this continues to burden Bahamian residents and businesses, resulting in millions of dollars lost in lost productivity and petty corruption.
“We are back to saying Bahamians are corrupt and our public servants are a burden.
“To be honest, when you use words like ‘radical simplification’, I think it’s a flowery, poetic way of saying you plan to cut the number of civil servants. To me, it’s like you’re announcing that the FNM intends to grab civil service jobs.”
The prime minister added: “In this government, we do not consider civil servants a burden. That is why we have promoted them and increased their salaries, while the LNP has not done the same.”
