All-rounder Andre Russell was in fine form, taking 3 for 19 in 2.3 innings, while opener Venkatesh Iyer scored an excellent 52 runs off 26 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes. These efforts helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets to clinch the IPL title in the final match at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai yesterday.
The win was KKR’s third IPL title and first since 2014. The match was clearly one-sided, with KKR dominating from the start.
Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummings won the toss and chose to bat first, but Kolkata’s fast-bowling duo of Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora struck first, reducing Hyderabad’s score to 5-62 after 10.2 overs. Hyderabad struggled to gain an advantage amid constant pressure from KKR bowlers.
In-form opener Travis Head was bowled by Arora on the first ball, while Abhishek Sharma was bowled by Starc for 2 off 5. Both openers returned to the stands at the end of the second innings.
Captain Pat Cummins top-scored at No. 9 with 24 runs from 19 balls including 2 fours and 1 six, while Aiden Markram top-scored with 20 runs from 23 balls including 3 fours. Russell was the best bowler as he finished with 3 for 19 in 2.3 innings. Starc and Harshit Rana took 2 wickets each to restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad to 113 all out in 18.3 innings, the lowest score in the first innings in an IPL final.
Chasing a target of 114, KKR openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine had a poor start, with Narine being dismissed by Pat Cummins for 6 runs off 2 balls. However, Gurbaz and number three batsman Venkatesh Iyer formed an excellent second-wicket partnership, scoring 91 runs to give KKR a comfortable win.
Iyer led the way with an unbeaten 52 off 26 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes. Gurbaz played a supporting role, scoring 39 off 32 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes.
Captain Shreyas Iyer hit 6 runs off 3 balls, including a 4, to hit the winning single off Shahbaz Ahmed to seal the win in 9.3 overs.
Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera was part of the winning team but he did not play in the final. Similarly, youngster Vijayakanth Viyaskanth of runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad also did not play.
