Bhutan roadshow in India expected to attract summer tourists

The first India Tourism Roadshow was held in four major cities of India with an aim to increase the number of Indian tourists visiting Bhutan.

The Ministry of Tourism of Bhutan held a five-day road show in the Indian cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata from June 17 to 21. The road show was aimed at celebrating 50 years of tourism in Bhutan and also aimed at attracting summer tourists.

In May this year, a total of 19,212 Indian tourists visited Bhutan, a 100% increase over April and May. In the first quarter of this year, the total number of tourists visiting Bhutan was 41,394, of which Indian tourists accounted for 58%.

The government has pledged to achieve a target of 300,000 inbound tourists per year and to increase the proportion of US dollar paying tourists to 50% in the first year, gradually increasing to 60% and eventually 70%.

In a recent interview with Central News Agency, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Togay said that Bhutan’s tourism strategy is high value and low quantity, and stressed that the country cannot accommodate a large number of tourists.

He said Bhutan’s goal is to receive 300,000 tourists a year, and it will not be able to cope with more than that. “Bhutan does not have the capacity to absorb a large number of tourists.”

The event was well received with over 600 companies and 700 Indian travel agencies participating. 18 Bhutanese exhibitors from different countries including leading tour operators, hotels and airlines showcased exclusive offers, packages and promotions aimed at attracting Indian tourists.

Carissa Nimah, chief marketing officer of the Indian Ministry of Tourism, said the enthusiastic participation of Indian travel agencies and the positive interaction with Bhutanese exhibitors highlighted the strong interest in Bhutan as a tourist destination.

She said the roadshow strengthened our resolve to build deeper connections with neighbouring markets.

“We look forward to more Indian tourists coming to experience the unique beauty and culture of our kingdom,” she said.

Neha Jain, CEO of Spectrum Holidays, said that the roadshow was an exciting one and provided a valuable opportunity to meet partners and gain a deeper understanding of Bhutan.
