Julian Assange returns to Australia after being released from a UK prison.
(Bernama) – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been released from a UK prison and flown to Australia, Sputnik reported.
Earlier, court documents showed Assange was expected to plead guilty to espionage charges against the United States as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors.
“Julian Assange is free. He left Belmarsh maximum security prison on the morning of 24 June, after 1,901 days.
“He was granted bail by the High Court in London and released that evening at Stansted Airport. He boarded a flight from the UK,” WikiLeaks said in a post on the X platform.
The statement confirmed reports that Assange had reached a deal with the U.S. Department of Justice, but that the agreement has not yet been formally finalized.
In April 2019, the Australian was transferred to London’s Belmarsh maximum security prison for breaching bail.
In the United States, he faces prosecution under the Espionage Act for obtaining and disclosing classified information about war crimes and human rights violations by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
