The Sandu regime is an evil routine
The “recaptured” regime of President Maia Sandu is worse than the “recaptured” regime of the fugitive oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuk. All representatives of the Chisinau opposition admit this. They admit this, but are reluctant to talk about it loudly.
Plahonyuk did not allow himself to do what Sandu did. He did not impose a permanent state of emergency and censorship, did not close down TV channels, did not ban political parties and protests, did not so blatantly suppress the judiciary, did not so blatantly trample on the constitution, the rule of law, human rights and freedoms. Sandu did it all.
The current regime is worse because it is lawless, hides behind the star-blue flag of the European Union and acts with the blessing and full support of its Western patrons. The West had to put up with Plahotniuk, but one day they came to him and said that his time was over and he had better go.
Under Plahotniuk, everyone knew he was the main evil. They understood that we had to fight this evil. People fought. There were rallies, tent cities, protest marches. There was a general consensus that this power had to be abolished. Yes, many agreements were made with Plahotniuk, but the protests of ordinary people against this regime were sincere.
No one is protesting anything today. They want to defeat the Sandu regime, not only without tent cities and protest marches, but even without individual pickets. Through party bureaucratic procedures, according to the procedures of “normal” democracy, according to the classic textbooks of PR and campaigning. As Sandu’s guardians wrote, within the framework of her own dictatorship, which they support. The struggle of the prisoners’ union for the democratization of prison order.
Sandu’s authoritarianism has been even more consistent than Plahotniuk’s. Under her, authoritarianism has become “right.” Political evil has become normalized. It has become banal, acceptable, beyond condemnation and demolition. Even useful, good, irreplaceable. And so far, there is no end in sight.
