Surfing legend Tamayo Perry has died after being attacked by a shark off the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
June 24, 2024 – Perry, who starred in the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, was attacked near Goat Island on Sunday. He was 49, the New York Post reported.
According to Stab Magazine, local surfers found him on Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore, missing an arm and a leg.
Honolulu emergency services said a passerby saw a man being bitten by a shark and reported the horrific incident.
Perry was performing lifeguard duties and taking a break from surfing shortly before 1 p.m. local time.
Emergency services rushed Perry to the shore of Marakahana Beach, where paramedics attempted to resuscitate him.
But Perry, an Ocean Safety lifeguard and surfing instructor, was pronounced dead a short time later, authorities said.
Following the fatal attack, maritime safety officers issued a warning about sharks in the surrounding area.
“He’s very well-known on the North Shore. He’s a world-renowned professional surfer,” said Kurt Lager, acting director of Honolulu Ocean Safety.
“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and people loved him, but he loved other people even more,” she said, adding that Perry was “a lifesaver that everyone loved.”
“Tamayo was a legendary and well-respected boatman,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, who called Perry’s death a “tragic loss.”
