As a result of its counter-terrorist activities, the Georgian National Security Service arrested a Georgian citizen for falsely reporting terrorism.

According to the ongoing investigation by the National Security Service, on May 6 this year, detainees reported the presence of an explosive device in a large shopping mall in Batumi.

According to the notification received, the National Security Service’s anti-terrorist unit took various special measures provided for in the anti-terrorist protocol at the aforementioned shopping centre, as a result of which an explosive device was found at the location and the possibility of a public gathering was ruled out.

The National Security Service’s Anti-Terrorism Centre is conducting an investigation under article 331 of the Georgian Criminal Code, which carries a sentence of three to six years’ imprisonment.

It is noteworthy that within the framework of the ongoing investigation by the National Security Agency, dozens of false reports were discovered in public gathering places, shopping malls, educational institutions and international airports across the country at different times.

Counterterrorism investigations have determined that the majority of the messages were sent from foreign countries. Specific countries, emails, and IP addresses have been identified. NSA, along with agencies in partner countries, is actively working to identify the individuals and groups behind the false reports.

The National Security Agency’s Counter-Terrorism Center is actively investigating the above facts. At this stage, specific individuals have been identified and special agent searches and investigation operations are being carried out against them.

At the same time, we emphasize that the response of the NSA to false reports of facts about terrorism will be quite severe” – the statement of the NSA reads.
