Prime Minister Sitiweni Rabuka said Fiji was a hub and transit point for transnational crime in the Pacific, connecting Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Rabuka said Fiji, like other Pacific Island nations, faced the challenge of protecting its waters from transnational organised crime.
Speaking to Pacific Island leaders today, Rabuka said Fiji had conducted many drug counter-operations in the past through the concerted efforts of border agencies and support from partners.
He said the seized drugs were estimated to be worth billions of dollars.
“We know that crime and criminal gangs do not respect national borders. Instead, they use them to build their business models. Cybercriminals have absolutely no regard for borders.”
Rabuka said only if we all work together can we combat and dismantle these criminal gangs.
Human security
The Prime Minister says the Pacific Regional and National Security Conference in Suva will bring together expertise from across the blue Pacific to strengthen our approach to human security.
He said these challenging times also remind us of the importance of human security.
“The ‘triple threat’ of noncommunicable diseases, mental health and the climate emergency is straining health resources everywhere.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic has also reminded us of the importance of biosecurity in our interconnected world,” Rabuka added.
