Univer24 is about individual achievements: the stars of this event are the determined swimmers who eliminate bubbles in the 50th pool of the Kecskemét swimming pool from 11 am on Saturday to 11 am on Sunday. We, the “other water mortals”, support the individual swimmers of the Debrecen Senior Swimming Club in their swimming: until eight in the evening we just swim happily, and then we take part in the 12-hour relay in the evening.

There were quite a few of us who came for the “support” swim (compared to the schools that showed up in large numbers), so it looked like I wouldn’t be short of kilometers: after the Katinka Hosszú decoration started, I had the opportunity to swim as much as I wanted in each swim session. In my first class I started with a 3.5 km sprint, in the second I swam a 7x400m medley, and the next event was 6x(200 chest + 200 back) + 200 chest Volts. This continues until the relay race begins (and you are selected as the starter) I swam 8,900 meters, including 4,200 meters of fast stroke, 2,100 meters of breaststroke, 1,900 meters of backstroke, and 700 meters of butterfly stroke.

Of course, the night relay swim was not just for relaxation. We had to work really hard to finally get third place. At the beginning, our club president Lachi Lentka (who, by the way, turns 60 today, I wish him a happy birthday) almost let our team take second place. Nevertheless, we managed to cover 41.8 kilometers in half-hour shifts. It was completely different from sprinting every 25 minutes in Zaloegerszeg. By the end, you can feel at least a little bit of the torment of swimming alone for 24 hours.

From 8am to 11am we felt that our basic task was to keep Béla Tóth, the swimmer from Debrecen and our sports partner, awake. You could see that he often didn’t know where he was, but after 20 hours of continuous swimming, this was not surprising. On the track next to us, Laci Hajdú was doing a beautiful pace, and I tried to say a few words to him, but the next day he could only communicate with me on Facebook. “I see you”, he wrote. It was a tough 24 hours! We knew then that Peti Kálmán would be the one who swam the most kilometers in 24 hours, and he was tirelessly moving towards the 80th kilometer, moving his arms and steps… Helga fought bravely with her shoulders, and it seemed that they really didn’t want the next arm step anymore. Slowly, it was 11 o’clock.
At the end (with 20km on my shoulders in 24 hours) I climbed out of the pool so that, as I waved goodbye, the focus would really be on those who had given the best effort. All the top athletes celebrated the end of the 24 hours in great shape, considering the circumstances. Here is their list and results – a big congratulations to them!
1. Péter Kálmán 81.2 km (Univer24 Peak)
2. Laszlo Hajdu: 71.4 km
3. Helga Demeny: 51.9 km
4. Bellato: 45.5 km
5. Sandor Elles: 44.9 km
