Yerevan, July 8. /ARKA/. Russia’s South Caucasus Railways, which operates Armenian Railways, said today that it will open a new platform near the Almast plant in Yerevan’s Kanaker-Zeytoon administrative district on July 15.
Workers cleared the train platforms, the road leading to the station from the Almast plant and the surrounding area of household and other debris, the company said in a news release.
“Trains from the new platform to Lake Sevan will begin running on July 15. Currently, the construction of the platform and the repair of the railway infrastructure near the Almast plant in Yerevan are nearing completion,” the message said.
In 2006, trains stopped running on this section, but have now been restored at the request of the region’s residents. Operation of the Almast station will allow residents of this part of Yerevan to travel to Lake Sevan at affordable prices in the summer. Tickets cost about 500-700 drams.
The South Caucasus Railway is operated by Russian Railways. The concession agreement was signed in 2008 for 30 years, with the right to extend for another 20 years after 20 years of operation.
