The Bahamas Agricultural Health and Food Safety Authority (BAHFSA) continues to monitor Select Jif Peanut Butter products recalled on May 20 by JM Smucker Co. of Lexington, Kentucky, USA, due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Many companies and brands have recalled multiple products containing peanut butter, such as Cargill, Walmart, Del Monte, Wawa, Albertson’s, Fresh Seasons, Country Fresh, etc. Therefore, please remain vigilant and identify any food products mentioned in the multiple product recalls by these companies by directly visiting www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts or the BAHFSA website www.bahfsabahamas.com under News and Alerts, or copy and paste the following URL: https://www.bahfsabahamas.com/alerts.

Because peanut butter has a long shelf life of up to two years, consumers are urged to go through their cupboards and pantries and throw out any products with batch numbers between 1274425 and 2140425 (these products also have a best before date printed next to them).

Symptoms may be similar to other types of illnesses, so if you consume an affected product and develop diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal cramping within 12-72 hours, seek medical attention. Protect unsuspecting children, as peanut butter products are a preferred snack for many children. Other vulnerable groups should also be wary of the multiple recalled products. No illnesses have been reported in the country to date.

The investigation is still ongoing.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact BAHFSA at bahfsa@bahamas.gov.bs or patriciajjohnson@bahamas.gov.bs.
