“Hopefully, these exports will give us assurance that our dream of becoming a developed country by 2045 is achievable.”

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan exported eight containers of plated steel sheets to Australia, Canada and Puerto Rico in Purwakarta district, West Java province, Friday (June 21).

“In order to become a developed country, we need to conquer the global market. Please note that we are exporting steel and the steel industry needs to use advanced technology,” he said in a statement from his office received on Saturday (June 22).

Hassan noted that over the past five years, demand for Indonesian steel from Canadian and Australian importers has increased by 16.94% and 14.72%, respectively.

The minister expressed hope that this positive trend will help Indonesia reduce its trade deficit with Canada and Australia.

He further said the government will continue to take measures to expand Indonesian products’ access to the Australian and Canadian markets, including developing trade agreements.

In this regard, a comprehensive economic partnership agreement between Indonesia and Australia has been launched, and a similar agreement between Indonesia and Canada is still under negotiation.

Hassan then praised PT Tata Metal Lestari, a producer of export steel products, for seizing opportunities to diversify its export markets and applying green industry principles to improve the competitiveness of its products.

“Hopefully these exports will give us confidence that our dream of becoming a developed country by 2045 is achievable,” he said.

Meanwhile, Stephanus Koeswandi, vice president of the steel producer, credited the government’s measures for enabling exports of coated steel.

He said the government has been supporting and protecting the domestic steel industry by promoting sustainable development principles and pushing business players to innovate and adapt.
