SIS funds more than 1 million diabetes care visits for its policyholders nationwide

One of the main chronic diseases suffered by the Peruvian population is diabetes. As a testament to this, between January 2023 and March 2024, SIS provided more than 1 million services related to diabetes control and treatment to its policyholders through Minsa health institutions and local governments.

SIS covers more than 60 diagnostics related to this pathology, in addition to various examinations and medical screening tests (blood sugar tests) for early detection, as well as medicines and supplies for the diagnosis, treatment and management of the disease. Diabetes.

On National Diabetes Day, SIS remembers that it guarantees funding for all care related to this disease, including the possible complications and those that can damage the eyes (retinopathy), kidneys (renal failure), nerves (neuropathy), skin. , heart and blood vessels, among others.

Coast and jungle are more popular

According to SIS, nearly 30% of care (more than 303,000 cases) occurred in Lima. The highest incidence rates are in the northern coastal and jungle regions.

Thus, after Lima, the region with the most registered SIS diabetes care is Piura (81,100), followed by La Libertad (76,500), San Martín (60,000), Lambayeque (47,900) and Loreto (44,000).

Affected in adulthood

It is worth mentioning that 52.6% of the care in the country is for insured persons over 60 years old, and 45.5% is for adults aged 30 to 59. The insured population aged 0 to 29 only accounts for 1.9% of diabetes care.

70% of the services were provided by insured women and 30% by men. As is the case around the world, women are more susceptible to the disease.

SIS, in line with the Ministry of Health’s health policy on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this disease, calls on its insured persons and the general public to undergo examinations at national health institutions to rule out diabetes and to be guided in a healthy lifestyle.
