The government has announced new laws for juvenile delinquency which will impose harsher penalties.
The new Young Serious Offender (YSO) declaration applies to 14 to 17 year olds who have committed two offences punishable by 10 years’ imprisonment.
So-called YSOs may be sent to military-style boot camps, which are entering their pilot phase.
The government says its goal is to reduce youth reoffending by 15%.
Meanwhile, the city of Oakland will redeploy 21 police officers, bringing the total number of patrol officers in the city center to 51 by the end of July.
It’s the start of a two-year phased plan that will see 63 extra officers deployed in new community patrol teams across Auckland’s three police districts, 17 in Wellington and 10 in Christchurch.

The prime minister also said gang members will face tougher penalties later this year.
Luxon said gang membership would be an aggravating factor in sentencing and that wearing gang insignia in public would be prohibited.
He said the new rules will be adopted in August and take effect in November.
Luxon said that “three strikes” legislation for serious crimes such as sexual assault will be restored in November.
