BANGKOK (Reuters) – Thai Prime Minister Srithawisin defended his frequent travels around the world in his first 10 months as leader of the Southeast Asian nation in a televised speech broadcast on Saturday.
Sreeta, a real estate tycoon and political newcomer who became prime minister in August last year, has made 15 overseas trips and pledged in March to take a two-month break from travel in response to public criticism.
He said: “Some visits are inevitable,” including attending official meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as well as China and Japan, while the third visit is to Sri Lanka to sign a free trade agreement.
Sreeta, nicknamed “Thailand’s Salesman” and who has often spoken of his goal to attract more foreign investment to Thailand, said the other visits were aimed at attracting trade and investment.
“It’s got to go,” he said in pre-recorded remarks.
