The coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo national football team, Florent Ibenguei, handed in his resignation to the president of the Congolese Football Federation at the national football body’s headquarters on Wednesday.

In his resignation statement to the press, Florent Ibenguei thanked all his colleagues at AS Vita “who allowed him to participate in the national team selection.”

“I became the head coach of the national team thanks to my achievements at Vita Club,” said the Congolese technician.

Florent Ibengue said he was under no pressure to resign. “I have told those who know me that this will be my last Africa Cup of Nations, no matter what the result. However, I will always obey the team’s arrangements. The president of the Confederation of African Football has offered me other positions, but we will not rush to consider them. The most important thing is that the Democratic Republic of Congo won the championship, which will always remain in my heart,” coach Ibengue told reporters.

Florent Ibenje has led the Leopards to a third place finish at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations since taking over in December 2014. He also won the 2016 African Nations Championship with the Leopards.
