Unfortunately, due to terrorist activities and other armed group violence, the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences (Fasch) of the National University of Haiti (Ueh) will not be able to celebrate its 50th anniversary (June 19, 1974 – June 19, 2024). Since March 2024, armed gang violence has forced several institutions in Port-au-Prince, including numerous faculties and schools of higher education, to cease operations.
On the occasion of Fasch’s 50th anniversary, Professor Roosevelt Millard asks the public and the Fasch community to reflect on this great BroadCast Unitedlectual edifice.
“On this special occasion of the half-century of its founding, we would like to wish a happy birthday to the current and present alumni of the institution: students, professors and staff. Special thoughts go to our employees, partner institutions and all those who in one way or another support the normal functioning of Fasch and offer their support during the difficult times that the institution is going through”, Professor Millard stressed.
The Faculty of Human Sciences (Fasch) contributes to the training of senior civil servants in Haiti and around the world.
“During these 50 years, Fasch has trained more than 70 classes in its 4 undergraduate study departments: Sociology, Social Services, Social Communication and Journalism, Psychology. Fasch has also trained hundreds of managers in the fields of Population and Development and Child Protection in the second cycle. Thousands of people (students, professionals, staff of partner institutions and organizations) have also participated in training seminars organized by Fasch’s Continuing Education and University Extension department.”
Despite the difficult conditions Haiti has faced over the past few decades, Roosevelt Millard has no hesitation in praising the quality of knowledge provided by El Niño University’s College of Humanities and Sciences.
“Our professionals and scientists serve in the public sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international agencies, the private sector and universities around the world,” added Professor Millard.
For 50 years, Fasch has successfully overcome the most difficult times caused by Haiti’s political and economic instability.
It has produced a large number of beautiful talents who are involved in the development of Haiti at different levels.
Many Fashi professors and students have also published a large number of works.
The Fasch professors enriched the BroadCast Unitedlectual heritage with several books and works of great significance, cited by Roosevelt Millard Watson Denis, Jean Casimir, Fritz Dorvillier, Frédéric Gerald Cherry, Lune Roque Pierre Louis, Sauveur Pierre Etienne, Renault Elie, Michel Hector, Gérard Pierre Charles, Pierre Michel Cherry, Gary Victor, Evelyne Trouillot, Raneke Hepburn, Herold Toussaint, Fritz Dessom, Arnold Antoine.

The Faculty of Human Sciences (Fasch) strongly condemns the attacks (acts of vandalism, looting and arson) carried out by armed groups on the infrastructure of schools such as the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (Famv), the Faculty of Science (Fds), the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Ens), the National School of Arts (Enarts), the National Library of Haiti (Bnh), the College of Bird, the College of the Lesser Seminary of Saint-Martial, among others.
“The situation is characterized by deadly and destructive violence, as well as forced displacement of the population within the country, including women, children and people with reduced mobility and special needs. There has been a significant increase in psychological and psychiatric problems, shortages of essential medicines, non-functioning health institutions, the closure of the country’s main international airport, a slowdown in banking services, and an accelerated rise in poverty and hardship among the most diverse sectors of the population,” the Fasch Coordination said in a note in early April 2024.
The Fashi Board also spoke out against summary executions and the open display of bodies in the metropolitan area of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
“We have no right to execute a person instantly, regardless of the conditions, and worse still, on a swift scale, when this person sometimes loses all control over his or her words under the weight of death. Nihilism can never build a nation. On the contrary, it will ultimately lead to the growth of hatred, forgetfulness, ignorance and contempt,” Fasch stressed.
Under the impact of time
The Faculty of Humanities and Sciences of Eugene (Fasch) is located on Avenue Christophe in Port-au-Prince and is an academic building consisting of three floors and one ground floor.
It offers some basic facilities for students and academic staff: classrooms, a large library, computer labs, professors’ offices, a population and development centre and the Pierre-Louis Salomon Auditorium, which can accommodate 300 to 500 people.
These infrastructures are designed to provide an environment conducive to learning, research and various academic activities.
However, Fasch was severely damaged in the earthquake on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.
The Embassy of Japan in Haiti provided 95 million gourdes for the Fashi Rehabilitation Project. The fund was managed by the Office of Monetization of Development Assistance Programs (Bmpad), which oversaw the reconstruction of the teaching staff, which was completed at the end of 2019.
As a result of this initiative, Fashi was redeveloped, providing new modern facilities adapted to the needs of students and academic staff.
Bmpad has recently launched a major effort that is expected to directly benefit undergraduate students in the Departments of Social Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, and Social Communication, as well as students in the Master’s program in Population and Development.
These initiatives are aimed at creating well-equipped premises that will provide students with an enhanced learning environment tailored to their academic needs. Through these efforts, students can now hope to study their courses in optimal conditions that will benefit their educational success and personal development.
The Coordination Committee of the Faculty of Human Sciences, in collaboration with the Rector of the National University of Haiti (Rueh), was forced to move the Fasch archives to a safe location due to attacks by violent armed gangs that have been spreading since the end of August 2023 in the Carrefour Feuilles district (southeast suburb of the capital, Port-au-Prince).
“We have decided to move its archives to a safe place to protect the important documents and archives of the academy since its establishment in 1974,” said the academy’s coordinator.
Continuing Learning Program
Fasch establishes partnerships with other universities abroad to support research activities in the humanities or social sciences.
“Through its collaboration with universities, Fasch participates in research activities in various disciplines, carries out professor exchanges, allows students to complete their studies and do internships at foreign universities (for example after the earthquake of January 12, 2010), and organizes a range of training from Master’s degrees, PhDs to postdoctoral studies”, affirms Professor Roosevelt Millard.
Meanwhile, the Faculty of Human Sciences offers continuing education in development and population.
Professors and researchers at this level “participate in conferences, forums and seminars in different countries. Administrative staff also benefit from specialized training, for example in the field of library science in Europe.
In the past, Fasch also had several research and student supervision structures. These were the Center for Historical and Social Research (Crehso), then led by Professors Michel Hector and Luc Smarth, which housed a dedicated documentation center, the Center for Research on Psychological and Social Interventions (Crips), and the Center for Mental Hygiene. Fasch also had an experimental center in Duvivier. Currently, the Fasch Center for Population and Development (Cepode) is responsible for training, research and community service tasks. It publishes the journal Les Cahiers du Cepode,” Professor Millard noted, encouraging those interested in participating in the project.

June 19, 2024 marks 50 years of Fasch’s survival in difficult and fragile conditions.
This entity, the National University of Haiti, was officially recognized by law on June 19, 1974, and published in Le Moniteur, the official magazine of the Republic of Haiti, on July 17, 1974 (No. 59).
“The Faculty of Human Sciences has been serving the Haitian community for fifty years. June 19, 2024, instead of a celebration, offers a great opportunity for everyone (administrative and technical staff, professors, students, the various national and international partners) to reflect on what has been done and what remains to be done”, Professor Josué Vaval, General Coordinator of the Faculty’s Board of Directors, suggested in an interim note.
