Adjusting the terrain is of great significance for the units in battle. Soldiers of the Engineer Regiment train on it every day. Today, the pioneers of the armed forces are helped by Queen Maxima. She has proven to have special military qualities.

The Queen had a tough time at ‘s-Hertogenbosch. First the soldiers’ job was explained. Then she helped them clear obstacles. This was done based on a river crossing practice scenario.
After the explanation, she was assigned to the armored engineer group, which was led by Boxer to the first obstacle. It turned out to be a wire obstacle with mines buried. This was broken through along with the group. The Queen finally pressed the red button herself. The explosives exploded.

Building bridges
During the second maneuver, Queen Máxima barely stayed dry. She was part of the bridge platoon that built a ferry to carry the Boxer across the River Meuse. The Queen was lowered into the water by the so-called bridge-building boat. She then connected the last pontoon to the ferry.
The exercise ended successfully on the seafront in accordance with regimental tradition, with the Queen singing the miners’ song and drinking brandy.

Removing obstacles or building floating bridges are two important tasks for engineers. They do this both at home and abroad. Earlier this year, about 25 soldiers from the regiment took part in the construction of an emergency dam near Maastricht.
This spring, they were further active in Iraq building accommodation for a deployed helicopter detachment. Last month, the engineers were deployed to NATO’s large-scale “Resolute Defender” exercise. Soldiers built a bridge on the way to Lithuania to allow a convoy to pass.
