Cheikh Kanté, former director general of the port of Dakar, and Mouth Bane, publishing director of the daily newspaper Dakar Times, will go on appeal on July 15. The latter was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for defamation at first instance and was ordered to pay 15 million CFA francs in damages to civil parties and has appealed.

The journalist was sued for defamation by Cheikh Kanté. The court sentenced Mr. Bain to six months in prison and to pay 15 million CFA francs to the former minister in charge of the Emerging Senegal program. Initially, they were opposed by the publishing director of the Dakar Times, who had written about what he called Cheikh Kanté’s “disastrous management,” according to Senenews.

He had promised to brandish documents proving the poor governance of the Port of Dakar under Sheikh Kanté. In it, Mouth Bane declared that “Sheikh Kanté is worse than Khalifa Sall”. In addition to the management of the Autonomous Port of Dakar, which he criticized, he also talked about the G3S contract, which earns 382 million CFA francs per month.

According to him, the above-mentioned contracts were signed without a tender and with a misrepresentation report full of false allegations, including the sale of $17 billion from Ecobank, the sale of Sonatel shares, the payment of nearly $3 billion to Acv Files and the management of sinking ships, etc.
