Government warns public to buy verified medicines – ZimEye

The Medicines Control of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has warned the public not to buy medicines from unverified sources such as street corners.

This practice is currently increasing and is worrying, posing a major threat to public health.

The cautious urgency dovetails with Zimbabwe’s recent endorsement of medicines regulation, highlighting the country’s commitment to safe and effective medicines.

“We know that some medicines may be cheaper to buy on the street, but the risks of using these medicines far outweigh any perceived benefits, let us put our health and well-being first by seeking medical treatment from licensed healthcare professionals and purchasing medicines from reputable sources,” said Richard Rukwata, Director General of MCAZ.

This sentiment was echoed by George Nyamayaro, president of the Community Pharmacists Association and director of Diamond Pharmacy.

“I urge the public to buy medicines from registered institutions and not to buy medicines from unverified sources even on the road. The reason is that there are many risks in doing so, public healthcare institutions cannot get the right dosage, they cannot get the right medicine for the right condition.

“Yes, medicines can save lives, but they can also cause death. As a pharmacy, we provide safe and affordable medicines under the supervision of the MCAZ. I urge the public to seek medical care from qualified healthcare professionals and purchase medicines from licensed pharmacies to ensure their safety and health.”

MCAZ is actively combating the sale of unlicensed drugs and is working with law enforcement to conduct raids and inspections on suspected dealers.

Some of the non-controlled medicines commonly found in Zimbabwe include antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, painkillers such as lofenac, and weight loss products.
