A massive landslide in a village in Papua New Guinea is believed to have killed more than 670 people, a UN official told AFP on Sunday.
“It is currently estimated that more than 150 houses are buried,” said Serhan Aktoprak, an official with the UN migration agency, adding that “more than 670 people are estimated to have died.”
“The situation is terrible, the land is still slipping. The water is moving and it poses a huge risk to everyone involved,” added Aktoprak, who is based in Port Moresby.
Aktoprak said more than 1,000 people have been displaced from the once prosperous village, and vegetable gardens and water sources have been almost completely destroyed.
“People are using digging bars, shovels and large farm forks to dig out bodies buried under the soil.”
