According to information collected by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM), by the beginning of the next academic year, 54 educational institutions founded by local governments will be reorganized or liquidated in Latvia.

At present, the Ministry of Education and Culture has collected information on the reorganization and liquidation decisions of 69 educational institutions, of which 55 will be reorganized before September, 7 will be reorganized before September 2025, and another 6 will be reorganized before September 2026.

It is planned to liquidate Sesava Primary School and merge it into another educational institution by August 2027. On the other hand, Medņeva preschool institution “Pasaciņa” was liquidated last academic year and merged into Viļakas preschool institution “Namiņš”.

The last academic year was the last for 34 educational institutions. Some of them actually continued their work as part of other educational institutions.

Six educational institutions in the Kraslava region will be liquidated, while five in the capital. Three educational institutions in Daugavpils, Cesi, Barva and Kuldiga districts will be liquidated. Two educational institutions will end their work in the Saldus and Aizkluks regions.

Liepāja Ezerkrasta Primary School will be connected to Liepaja Raina Secondary School. On the other hand, Rezekne Secondary School No. 2 will provide basic education and general secondary education courses of Rezekne Secondary School No. 4 through distance learning and correspondence.

Last school year was also the last for the Gulbish Primary School in Gulbene District, the Varini Primary School in Smilteni District and the Livani Primary School. The Baumanis Kārlis Viijľenes Primary School in Limbaži District will also close and transfer the preschool program to the Ozolaine kindergarten.

The Kolka primary school in the Talsi district will be liquidated, and the Rojas “Zelta zivtiņa” kindergarten will be expanded to include a preschool stage. A preschool institution in the Dobele district and one in the Dienvikkurzeme district will also be liquidated and merged into another educational institution.

By merging five kindergartens, two new preschool institutions will be created in Liepāja. On the other hand, by merging the Jurmala Jaundubulti Primary School and the Jurmala Pumpuri Secondary School, the Jurmala Oblast City Pumpura Secondary School will be created.

The Smiltene District will establish the Ojāras Vācieš Gaujiena General Education and Arts Primary School, which will be formed by merging the Ojāras Vācieš Gaujiena Primary School, Gaujiena Primary School and Gaujiena School of Music and Arts.

Changes will be made in the next academic year at two schools in Ogre, three schools in Tukuma district and three educational institutions in Talsi district, as well as Turava Primary School and Riga Secondary School No. 75 in Kuldiga district.

Six schools in the capital will undergo changes in their educational levels next year. In the coming years, Liepāja Dzintara Secondary School, Jaunpils Secondary School, Kuldīga Secondary School for Arts and Humanities, Olaine Secondary School No. 2, Jaunjelgava Secondary School and Nereta Jānis Jaunsudrabiņa Secondary School will also undergo changes in their educational levels.

Following the closure and reorganization of schools, a new kindergarten “Auseklītis” will start operating in Riga this year.

The decision to establish, reorganize or close an educational institution is made by the municipality that is the founder of the educational institution. The municipalities notify the Ministry of the Interior of their decision by submitting a document and requesting the Ministry of the Interior to coordinate this decision.

When considering issues concerning the coordination of municipal decisions, the Ministry of Education assesses the quality of work of educational institutions, the availability of continuing education, the provision of transport, the development of a network of educational institutions in the region. The Ministry of Education and Culture said that the opinions of students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders are also taken into account.
