Alfalfa a promising animal feed option for Ethiopian farmers
At some African RISING sites, alfalfa is the main supplementary feed for ruminants, especially during the dry season when other feeds are scarce. Alfalfa is an important source of protein for animal fattening and milk production and can be mixed with other livestock feeds, including those based on crop residues or hay.
In Ethiopia, most farmers do not fully understand the importance of this plant or how best to use it as livestock feed, so there needs to be a clear understanding of how to manage it.
The project addresses the awareness challenge through a variety of methods including training and demonstrations.
