The leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to turn around Ghana’s industrial sector through his proposed 24-hour economy.
He said the economic measure would help Ghana become self-sufficient and focus on export-led growth through favourable tax policies, stimulus packages and financial assistance for specific sectors such as agro-processing and manufacturing.
The initiative is committed to maintaining a favorable development environment, effectively collaborating with the private sector, creating employment opportunities for the large number of unemployed youth, increasing productivity and improving the living standards of citizens.
Former President Mahama made the assurance while delivering a speech on his behalf at the inaugural Presidential Lecture Series of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) held at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
The Presidential Lecture Series is designed to engage presidential candidates from each political party in focusing specifically on policies that address challenges facing GRASAG, thereby improving research outcomes.
Former President Mahama said his government would enact new laws and invoke laws to support businesses that adopt a 24-hour operating system to accelerate development, and criticized the government for causing the unemployment rate to jump from 8.5% in 2017 to 14.7%.
He said the situation has led to extreme frustration among people, especially the youths, forcing them to leave the country in search of a better future. He assured that the NDC will take urgent measures in 2025 to inject new hope into the economy and lead it out of the current challenges.
“The NDC government will prioritize transparency in economic management to build the confidence needed to attract investments in financial markets,” he said.
On the issue of education, former President Mahama said he was not against free high school education and had never said that free high school education was a bad policy.
However, he believes that the free SHS must be improved and not implemented on an ad hoc basis as it is now.
The National Chairman of GRASAG, Mr. Emmanuel Owusu, said the Presidential Lecture Series was an important milestone in fostering a culture of dialogue, engagement and active participation in the nation-building process.
He said GRASAG was eager to hear the insights and visions of the presidential candidates on the future of Ghana, especially on the youth who represented the engine of progress.
Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, commended 6GRASAG for the initiative, describing it as “critical” in addressing the challenges facing GRASA in terms of quality research.
He said research enables universities to delve deeper into various disciplines, gain a deeper understanding of them, explore new areas, question accepted beliefs and find innovative solutions to complex problems in the pursuit of BroadCast Unitedlectual growth.
