Jaba Kankava will not play in the 2024 European Championship – the Georgian national team player said that he made the decision after the competition in March – if the national team calls up, he will not participate in the European Championship as a player, but as a simple fan.
Cankawa was one of the players named by the coach in his national team application. The player did not discuss the reasons for the decision in his post.
“We are still a few weeks away from the Georgian national team’s debut at the European Championship. I hope our team can achieve the best in Germany and celebrate again with the Georgian fans, just like we did on March 26 in Tbilisi. I am very happy to have reached the semi-finals and final with the team and to have participated in this victory that I have made historic.
However, I want to tell you the decision I made after the March tournament: if the national team calls me up, I will go to the European Championship as an ordinary fan rather than as a player.
I am very grateful to the coaching staff for their confidence in me in March, and our main goal was to unite and win a historic championship. I am also grateful for the trust I have earned now, including the trust of the coaching staff and the fans, from whom I feel a lot of support.
As a fan, I will support the German national team and wish the 26 players success in their efforts to protect the Georgian name on German pitches.”
