King Willem-Alexander took part in a training flight in an Apache attack helicopter today. He flew over the 300-hectare RAF Spadham range in Carlisle, northern England. In the training area, helicopter crews face huge challenges, just like in a war zone.

The range has radar systems that simulate enemy threats. One of the tricks for pilots is to mislead the signals from these systems with self-protection equipment. They also have to be able to fly low and within the possibilities provided by the terrain, such as behind hills or woodlands. Conduct tactical operations, execute the mission, and disable the radar system if necessary. This can be crucial because if there is a helicopter in the radar’s sight range, then the missile may track it.

Therefore, the added value of this training, called Tac Blaze, is very important for helicopter pilots. Various tactical scenarios can be carried out not only with Apaches. This also happens with Chinooks and Cougars. For example, both of these transport helicopters are used to drop soldiers of the 11th Aviation Brigade on the “front line”. If such a scenario becomes a reality, the aim is for the aircraft to leave the battlefield intact. Of course, the “red berets” must also land unscathed to fight the enemy.

Tac Blaze Deadline is July 5
Tac Blaze started last Monday and will run until July 5. During that period, one situation was more creepy than the other, sometimes there were army soldiers, sometimes not. And then there were the helicopters.
Tac Blaze was educational for all parties. The King also showed great interest. After his “own training flight” he talked with some of the exercise participants.
