Every year, about 3 to 5 percent of Guam’s land mass catches fire. But why is our tiny island so prone to fire? “The fire problem on Guam — all of them are human-caused,” says Christine Camacho Fejeran, the USDA’s forestry and soil resources supervisor. “It could be drug-related, it could be poaching-related, but we actually have an arson problem on the island,” she says. Camacho Fejeran has noticed a pattern of arson. Today’s fire, however, was a cover-up. “If you find evidence, notify law enforcement,” she says. The field training is part of a national course taught by the USDA Forest Service for officers tasked with investigating fires and arresting those responsible, like Officer Darrell Cabrera.
