NEW YORK (AP) — Willie Mays, the electrifying baseball player whose unique combination of talent, attitude and expressiveness made him one of the most popular and celebrated athletes in American history, has died. He was 93.
Mays’ family and the San Francisco Giants jointly announced Tuesday that the former player “passed away peacefully” Tuesday afternoon surrounded by his loved ones.
The center fielder is the oldest living member of the Hall of Fame. The way he catches the ball with his glove and runs around the bases as his hat flies off symbolizes the joy he has in playing.

His over-the-shoulder long pass catch in the 1954 World Series is one of baseball’s most famous defensive feats.
In 22 seasons, almost exclusively with the New York Giants and San Francisco, Mays batted .302, hit 660 homers, totaled 3,283 hits, scored more than 2,000 runs and won 12 Gold Gloves.
