On June 18 this year, in an emotional ceremony, staff from different areas of the Bertha Calderón Hospital in Managua presented 45th Anniversary of Bertha Calderón’s Immortalitya heroine who resisted the dictatorship of Somoza.

As part of the commemoration, an arts and cultural event was held and the life and legacy of colleague Bertha Calderón was discussed.
During the event, Dr. Carmen Cruz, Director of Bertha Calderón Hospital, said:The Sandinista government fulfilled all of Comrade Bersa Calderón’s dreams. “She is a woman who stood out because of her relentless struggle, starting in the kitchen area and showing us a story of progress as she studied, worked and succeeded in becoming a nurse.”
Hospital director Bertha Calderon recalled that colleague Bertha Calderon stood out for her care for patients and her ideals and fight for a better Nicaragua.

Dr. Armando Poveda commented: Bertha Calderón was a colleague of ours at the Hospital Center. She was considered an equal woman and was committed to the rights of all hospital workers. She fought as a union member and was always at the forefront of the trenches at the hospital.
We at the Bertha Calderón Hospital follow the Sandinista ideals of our colleagues, and we work with a deep concern for the well-being of the Nicaraguan people, always restoring the right to health that our Commandant (Daniel Ortega) and our colleague (Rosario Murillo) have always sought. Dr. Poveda added, stressing that all people have equal and free access to health.
On June 18, 1979, Sandinista militant and nurse Bertha Calderón Roque was killed by Somoza guards who found her treating wounded in the insurgent struggle in a secret hospital.
His dedication, love and commitment to the health of the Nicaraguan people will live forever. Today, every staff member at this hospital is named after him.
The commemoration ended with the workers singing songs and chanting slogans in tribute to Comrade Bertha Calderón and reaffirming their commitment to the ideals and dreams of all the heroes and martyrs, in the hope of achieving a happy and forever free Nicaragua through the good management of the Sandinista government.
