The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center is a vibrant and active research organization focused on coastal processes and the growing hazards caused by climate change; ocean-related hazards caused by subduction zones and associated tsunamis and earthquakes; and physical science research that supports ecosystem processes, health, and recovery. It also houses the only ocean minerals research facility within the U.S. government.
The Center Director is responsible for the leadership, management, and financial aspects of the Center and works collaboratively with USGS programs and external partners to develop and implement the Center’s strategic research direction and goals. Under the supervision of the USGS Southwest Regional Director, the Center builds partnerships with other USGS Centers, DOI Bureaus and Federal agencies, and local and international organizations to further define and support its mission: to provide managers with scientifically rigorous information on natural hazard risks; to promote safer, more productive coastal communities; and to improve the management of natural resources.
Strategically located in Santa Cruz, California, the center is part of a vibrant scientific community that collaborates in research, technology development, and shared resources. The center is comprised of approximately 80 geologists, oceanographers, geophysicists, geochemists, and others, and its research covers a large swath of the United States, primarily the West Coast, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific, as well as international locations.
