Result of negotiation on employment conditions of defence personnel | News item

The Ministry of Defence and the unions reached a new negotiation yesterday. This will run from January 1, 2025 to September 1, 2026. The current agreement for a 7% pay rise will expire on December 31. The new negotiation includes another 7% wage increase: 5% from January 1 and 2% from January 1, 2026. In addition, there is a one-time payment this year and another next year. In October, November and December, miscellaneous expenses will increase by an additional 5%.

Prices are rising and the world security situation is deteriorating. Therefore, the Department of Defense and the labor unions wish to focus in this agreement on key employment conditions and measures that recognize and value the efforts of the military and civilian employees of the Department of Defense. The most important point in the so-called negotiation results is in this message. The complete negotiation results are included as an appendix.

The union has presented a positive proposal for new employment conditions to its members. If members agree, the proposal will be finalized on July 2, 2024. Defense employees who are members of the union can vote.

Every defense employee will receive a 5% pay increase starting January 1, 2025. Pay will increase by another 2% starting January 1, 2026. In addition to these pay increases, if the results are approved, defense personnel can also expect the following:

  • a one-time payment of €500 in September 2024;
  • a one-time payment of €350 in July 2025;
  • Miscellaneous fees will increase by 5% in October, November and December 2024;
  • From January 1, 2025, the commuter allowance increases to 23 cents per kilometre.

State Secretary Christophe van der Maat, responsible for personnel files, presented the result. “I am very pleased that we were once again able to reach a new negotiation result in good time. This time even a plus for this year. With this good result we can now work even harder to retain and attract more employees.”
