“The vehicle initially stopped for a short while pending police inspection and officers on scene spoke to the driver, but the vehicle did not stop and quickly left the area towards Ronwood Avenue.

“Police lights were on and officers were preparing to use batons when the vehicle swerved and crashed into a tree.”

Brand said numerous emergency responders responded, but despite the efforts of the first responders, the driver died at the scene.

One passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“There are currently several investigations ongoing, including a major incident investigation and a policies, practices and procedures investigation, as well as a serious incident investigation.

“As is standard procedure in such circumstances, the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been informed of the matter,” Mr Brand said.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand A spokesman said police were called to the crash site in Papatoeto at 11.42pm.

“We dispatched two fire engines, two rescue vehicles and a support vehicle to the scene, where there was a single-vehicle collision, which left two people trapped.

“Both people are trapped and staff are using rescue equipment to get them out.”

According to a Herald photographer on the scene, multiple rescue teams were using cutting equipment.

After a while, a passenger in the car was rescued and rushed to the hospital.

A police spokesperson at the scene said that those involved were all adults.

“At the moment, Lambie Avenue will be blocked off for a number of hours while we investigate. We have our serious crash unit, our photographic unit, our CIB (criminal investigation branch) all here.

“At this time, we are unable to comment further. We will be releasing a full statement later this morning.”

Ambulances, fire trucks and police cars were parked along Lambie Drive following the accident. Traffic management has closed Lambie Drive in both directions between Lambie Drive and Puhinui Road.
