Chilpancingo, Guerrero. (apro) – Salvador Villalva Flores, elected mayor of Copala, in the Costa Chica municipality in Guerrero, was murdered early this Monday.
The Guerrero state Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed that the crime took place on Monday morning on the Acapulco-Pinotepa National Federal Highway in the town of San Pedro Las Playas in the municipality of Acapulco.
It turns out that the shooting against the mayor-elect took place around 5:00 a.m. on his bus from Mexico City.
At least two men were involved in the attack; a woman accompanying Villalba Flores was injured.
Salvador Villalba is a retired navy captain and a member of the Morena party, but he was registered by the Mexican Avanza Party for the election.
During the campaign, Salvador Villalba reported threats against him, and the federal government offered him protection from National Guard agents.
About a year ago, on June 29, 2023, in the same municipality, Jesús González Ríos, leader of the Green Party and candidate for mayor of Copala, was murdered with extreme violence, having reported death threats from the mayor of the PRD, Guadalupe García Villalva.
The political team of Jesús González Rios supports the Mexican Avanza candidate Salvador Villalba Flores in the recent elections.
The navy captain outlasted Morena candidate José Luis Chávez, who was backed by card-carrying mayor Guadalupe García Villalva, by about 300 votes.
A few minutes before 10 a.m., the governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado Pineda, mentioned the issue on her Facebook and X accounts: she has not given interviews to journalists since December 2021 and manages it through social networks.
“I strongly condemn the despicable events that resulted in the death of Copala’s president-elect, Salvador Villalba Flores. “I express my deepest condolences and stand with the mayor-elect’s family, friends and supporters.”
The President, who participated this morning in a press conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, assured that she asked the National Attorney’s Office to conduct investigations quickly and effectively to guarantee access to justice and ensure that crimes are not punished.
This brings the number of attacks on politicians, former candidates and family members since the June 2 election to five, including three homicides.
During the campaign, at least 15 murders of candidates, candidates and their immediate family members occurred in Guerrero.
Despite these figures, the Morenoist president assured that it was an election that was conducted peacefully and without major incidents.
