As a prelude to the International Day of Family Remittances, this Sunday, June 16, 2024, the Embassy of Haiti in Qatar and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized a roundtable on remittances and the diaspora. About 30 ambassadors, heads of delegations, and representatives of the World Bank and the private sector participated in the first of a series of planned discussions at the United Nations House in Qatar.
During the discussion, speakers touched on: the leading role played by diasporas in the development of their countries of origin and the socio-economic and cultural enrichment they bring to host countries; the vast and untapped potential of remittances as a development player in the global financial ecosystem; and finally, the support that diplomatic and consular missions can provide to optimize the goals of diaspora remittances as a financing tool for innovative development.
Furthermore, the moderator of the round table, Ambassador Francois Guillaume II of Haiti, accompanied by Minister Counsellor Ms. Vichy De La Fayette Thibeaud, welcomed the rich and substantive discussions and the recommendations that followed.
The organizers also used the event to pay tribute to all the sons and daughters of Haiti living abroad. According to them, remittances from the diaspora contribute more than 20% of the GDP to the Haitian economy. They also explained that remittances from the diaspora are a valuable source of economic and social development for the country.
