Cardinals manager Oliver Marmore announced that catcher Wilson Contreras plans to begin his minor league rehab assignment.

The Dominican strategist made the statement ahead of the team’s final game this Sunday against the Cubs.

Contreras, who has been out of action since breaking his left forearm on May 7, is expected to play with either Triple-A Memphis or Double-A Springfield starting this Tuesday, meaning the Venezuelan could rejoin the Cardinals this weekend, according to MLB-related media.

Contreras was cleared by doctors to resume baseball activities last week after a CT scan showed the forearm was healed, and he took full batting practice at Busch Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

The Creole native was scheduled to bat again on Sunday and most recently expected to return by July (about four weeks earlier than expected).

At the time of the injury, Contreras was the Cardinals’ most productive player, hitting .280 with six homers in 31 games.
