Michael Maguire was sitting behind the goalposts at CommBank Stadium on Saturday night and he was admiring the performance of Mitchell Moses – and it had nothing to do with his kicking skills.
More than once this season, Maguire has given up his seat on the halfway line and instead sat behind the goalpost to watch the Blues’ promising stars play.
The coach wants to make sure his newest No. 7 is able to perform at his best in attack and get the ball to tired opponents, or to the side of the court with the fewest defenders.
Maguire has previously said that sitting at one end of the pitch allows him to better observe opposing defences, which may be “six plus four” or “five plus five”, referring to ten players either side of the two defences, not including the full-backs.
Parramatta lost vs Sydney Roostersbut Moses did almost everything right when in possession. Maguire, who attended a party at South Sydney the day before heading west for the game, has been speaking highly of the 29-year-old Moses.
He said he chose Moses over Blues halfback Nico Hynes in the first game because his big-game experience couldn’t be ignored. Moses would have played in the first game if he hadn’t been unable to play due to a foot injury.

“Given the opportunity I’ve had to pick players from a wider pool, and given the ones I’ve had, I feel very comfortable with Mitch coming in,” Maguire said. “He’s had the experience. He knows what to expect.”
Moses, who has made three appearances for the Blues, including his debut in 2021 when he played almost the entire game despite a back injury, said joining Origin was a welcome distraction after another difficult year at the club.
