Special weather forecast
Issued by the Bahamas Meteorological Service on Monday, May 30, 2022 at 12:00 p.m.
A broad trough of low pressure across the northwest and central Bahamas will linger over the region over the next few days. The trough will eventually lift and move northeastward into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday. Scattered showers and locally severe thunderstorms are expected this week. Severe thunderstorm activity will be accompanied by heavy rains, strong gusty winds, and frequent lightning activity. Prolonged rainfall is expected to result in localized flooding over low-lying areas. Improved weather conditions are expected over the extreme northwest (Bimini, Berry Islands, Grand Bahama, Abaco) and northwestern Bahamas (North Andros, New Providence, Eleuthera) on Wednesday, June 1 and Thursday, June 2.
The Bahamas Meteorological Service is also closely monitoring the potential for widespread showers and thunderstorms associated with the remnants of Hurricane Agatha, currently located off the southeastern coast of Mexico. This disturbance is expected to develop near the Yucatan Peninsula and the southwestern Gulf of Mexico by Wednesday. Weather forecast models indicate that this disturbance may develop into a low pressure system and begin moving northeastward Thursday night. This low pressure system is expected to deepen further and move across central Cuba on Friday and into the northwestern Bahamas Saturday morning.
As the cyclone approaches the Bahamas, it has the potential to develop into a tropical depression or storm. The Bahamas Weather Service will continue to monitor and inform the public of any possible developments. Regardless, residents in the northwestern and central Bahamas should be prepared for severe thunderstorm activity with heavy rainfall beginning on Friday evening, June 3 through Sunday, June 5.
The public should be aware that the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season will begin on June 1, so it is recommended to continue to be prepared.
Please note that this statement will be updated on Wednesday
June 1, 2022.
Mr. Jeffrey Simmons
Acting Director
