“Through Eid al-Adha, we show that we are willing to build bridges with other groups in society and that we feel connected to the fate of all Surinamese people.” Suriname’s (BiZa) Interior Minister Bronto Somohardjo spoke on Sunday, June 16, at Independence Square, where Muslims prayed together for Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice.
The minister is proud to be a Muslim and expressed hope that the moral of this national day will ensure stronger bonds between all racial, cultural and religious groups.
Somoharjo believes that solidarity, unity and mutual solidarity are impossible without sacrifice. “In Islam, sacrifice means that a person gives up something that he considers very valuable without burdening or disadvantageous to others,” he describes.
He pointed out that the Muslim festival of sacrifice is an expression of obedience and submission to the Almighty Creator of mankind. Moreover, the quality of sacrifice is taught to mankind. Thus, man grows up with this praiseworthy character trait, which makes him constantly aware of his social responsibilities towards his fellow human beings. Especially good citizenship, social compassion and service to the country and the people.
This understanding must lead to a sustainable society where we Surinamese are always ready to offer everything good to others and help them with advice, money and compassion,” the Minister said.
According to him, Eid al-Adha can only be understood if one can extract this message from it. For him, the festival of sacrifice means more than just distributing livestock to the needy and less fortunate.
