As part of the Ukrainian Peace Summit in Bürgenstock (Switzerland), the head of government, Xavier Esport, today participated in a round table entitled “The Human Dimension”, which brought together 30 representative delegations and organizations from governments and international institutions to discuss the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine for civilians. The table focused in particular on finding solutions to ensure the protection of the rights and freedoms of children in accordance with international humanitarian law in the context of armed aggression.
Esport then participated in a plenary session chaired by Swiss President Viola Amhead and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where heads of state and government and senior representatives of international organizations discussed different ways to promote diplomatic dialogue at the highest level to achieve a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine.
Thus, the Ukrainian Peace Summit ended with a joint statement, joined by Andorra, calling for ensuring nuclear safety, guaranteeing food supplies, releasing prisoners of war and stopping the deportation of illegally displaced Ukrainian children.
Specifically, the joint statement advocated that nuclear facilities be kept away from conflict and remain “safe.” Likewise, they noted that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant “must continue to operate safely under Ukraine’s sovereign control and supervision.” They also warned that any threat to use nuclear weapons is “unacceptable.”
On the other hand, the signatories stressed that it is “fundamental” to have “free, full and safe” commercial navigation and access to seaports in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Accordingly, they claimed that attacks on merchant ships on this route or in the ports themselves are “unacceptable”. The statement stressed that food security cannot be turned into a weapon and advocated the free transportation of Ukrainian agricultural exports.
The third point of the statement calls for a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, and specifically for the return of “all illegally displaced and deported Ukrainian children, as well as all other illegally detained Ukrainian civilians.”
For the signatories, achieving peace in the long run requires Russia’s participation in the negotiations. Accordingly, they clearly stated that they would take “concrete” steps in the three points of the statement so that representatives of all parties can participate in the talks in the future.
On the other hand, during the two working days of the Ukraine Peace Summit, Espot had the opportunity to discuss bilateral cooperation with the Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Croatian President Andrej Plenković and the Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden.
He also spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
