Mexico City (apro) – The Catholic Church calls for an end to child labor, ensuring that at least 3.7 million children and adolescents in Mexico are in this situation, a phenomenon that stems from poverty.
In its editorial “Desde la fe”, it cited data released by the International Organization for Migration, which reported that cases of children being used as guides for illegal immigration had increased by more than 160%.
According to the 2022 National Child Labor Survey (ENTI), at least 3.7 million children and adolescents in Mexico are trapped in child labor, and according to data from UN agencies, this phenomenon is increasing due to the increase in absolute poverty among families (United Nations, 2024).
The main states with this problem are Chiapas and Guerrero, which is currently governed by Morena.
“In states like Guerrero (24.5%) and Chiapas (20.8%), the situation is delicate, with children aged 11 or 12 who do not yet know how to read or write and are forced to work to survive,” he said.
“On June 12, the World Day against Child Labour is commemorated. Let us not reflect on this serious problem only on this day. “When we see a child struggling to earn a few coins, let us reaffirm our commitment to our values,” the Church asks.
