The anxiety of Hollywood’s summer movie season gave way to joy over the weekend with the massive debut of Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

The animated sequel grossed $155 million from 4,440 theaters in the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

Not only is it the second-highest opening weekend for Pixar in its nearly 29 years of filmmaking, it’s also the second-highest opening weekend for an animated feature in history (behind Incredibles 2’s $182.7 million debut in 2018); it’s also the highest-grossing film of 2024, with no other film topping $100 million. Inside Out 2’s global debut grossed an astonishing $295 million, with an estimated international haul of $140 million.

The success is huge for Pixar and marks a much-needed comeback for the studio, which has had a string of disappointments, including the ultimately popular Element and the underdog Lightyear. It’s also critical for the health of the Hollywood ecosystem and theatrical releases, which had been down 26% before this weekend. Inside Out 2 had the biggest opening since Barbie opened to $162 million last July.

Inside Out 2 cost an estimated $200 million to make, not including millions in marketing expenses. Heading into the weekend, it was expected to open at $90 million, on par with Inside Out’s opening weekend in June 2019.

In second place is Sony’s Bad Boys for Life, which is now in its second weekend with $33 million, just 42% below its debut. In just 12 days, it has earned over $112 million domestically and over $214 million worldwide. As of Friday, the four-movie franchise has surpassed the $1 billion mark.
