Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

In the past, BPH was treated by open surgery to remove part of the enlarged prostate (called an adenoma). Around 1930, endoscopic surgery was developed, where an endoscope was inserted through the urethra and an electric knife was used to scrape out the adenomas one by one. This is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). To this day, it is performed as a standard surgical procedure for BPH in many patients.
