N5J Jarvis Island News May 9, 2024
Joe, W8GEX and I have been working with Don, N1DG to get the Alliance to recognize Jarvis Island as a new independent DXCC entity. There is a good reason for this. Don has presented his report to the DX Council, but the response has been lukewarm so far. We think a “grassroots” approach may work.

Jarvis Island N5J Expedition
April 21, 2024
Since the Dateline DX Association announced plans to launch Jarvis Island this summer, many people have asked us if we could arrange with the IOTA and POTA project organizers to ensure our DXpedition is approved.
Jarvis is one of the rarest IOTA counters, having been out of production for 34 years. 82% of IOTA project participants require it.
Due to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit requirements, although the station, antennas, and power sources are located on Jarvis Island, local operators must conduct DX expeditions from the MV Magnet, which remains offshore within the Jarvis Island National Wildlife Refuge.
Both the IOTA and POTA programs have agreed to recognize QSOs made by local operators, but not to allow QSOs made by internet remote operators to count. Therefore, QSOs made by AA7JV, HA7RY, N1DG, KO8SCA and KN4EEI will count towards the reward. The content uploaded to the clublog by the N5J team each day will identify the operator. In addition, at the beginning of each operator’s shift, the team will work to publish the operator’s call sign on the cluster so that trackers can be notified in real time. At this time, all call operations should be conducted by the island team and ensure that the pattern is 100% compliant with IOTA/POTA standards.
In addition to the 5 operators mentioned above, there is an experienced team of 24 operators from 8 countries operating up to 6 sites around the clock, ensuring that DXers around the world have ample opportunities to add ATNOs or band fills to their DXCC totals.

KH5 – Palmyra Island and Jarvis Island
We have 84 days until we depart from American Samoa for Jarvis Island. We are busy building and testing equipment. In addition to the RIB-s, much of our equipment is built in-house and is designed specifically for remote operations where reliability is critical.
We have already finalized the station configuration. We will have six stations on the island. Four of the stations are set up for remote operation and two will be operated locally, but we do have the flexibility to operate any station locally (from the ship) or remotely via Starlnk and the internet.
