Zahid says Malaysia-China relations ‘special’ on 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties

HONG KONG: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has hailed the close relationship between Malaysia and China over the past five decades as special.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said this was evidenced by the strong government-to-government (G2G), business-to-business (B2B) and people-to-people (P2P) links that have existed for a long time.

In addition, he said that this includes Chinese tourists who can enjoy 30 days of visa-free entry to Malaysia, and Malaysian tourists who can enjoy 15 days of visa-free entry to China.

Ahmed Zahid is currently on his first official visit to China since taking office as Deputy Prime Minister in December 2022. The visit is at the invitation of Chinese Vice Premier Ding. It will last for 11 days starting from Tuesday (May 21). The first stop is Xuexiang, Hong Kong.

He told the Malaysian media here on Thursday (May 23): “I have a very close relationship with their leaders. I have been involved in China affairs as a corporate member since the 1990s, and even more so now that I am in the government. in this way.”

He added that his visit was also aimed at strengthening relations between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chinese President Xi Jinping as well as Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

Commenting on his visit, he said several issues would be discussed, including technical and vocational education and training (TVET), halal industry and trade.

“In Shanghai, I will witness the signing of several agreements (related to TVET). Also, in Beijing, I will officially attend the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China.”

Malaysia and China formally established bilateral relations on May 31, 1974. – Bernama
